Artist Statement

As an artist with a Tropical upbringing I am fascinated with water – its many hues and colours. As a landscape painter living in Canada , I find myself drawn to the beauty and vastness of the land particularly the countryside. It gives me much pleasure and makes me humble to attempt to give expression to this.

When I paint I seek to impart a sense of place to the viewer while at the same time attempting to see beyond the physical and to give expression to that which is unseen. This drives me to paint only what triggers an emotional response in me.

In developing my style I have drawn from a diverse range of influences, which include Rembrandt, The Impressionist Painters – Monet, Corot, Van Gogh to the late nineteenth century American landscape painter, Winslow Homer. I believe that a study of the works of these masters will provide all the principals I will require to find my own voice.

My paintings are not trendy, mysterious or flamboyant. Nor do I attempt to shock but to depict the truth about life as I see it in a naturalistic way. By being faithful to these principals I hope to produce paintings that speak to the heart.

Biography

Since childhood I have derived much pleasure from drawing and painting and this has never left me. I am self taught, although I have been influenced by studying the works of the master Impressionist painters such as Monet, Van Gogh and Corot, as well as those of the nineteenth century American water colourist Winslow Homer.

In the year 2000, after a successful accounting career, I decided to turn my attention to my first love, visual art. Iam intrigued by the beauty that surrounds us and this fascination has led me to paint landscapes. The year 2001 saw the first presentation of my work, which took place at the Civic Garden Centre Gallery in Toronto .

Since then I have taken part in many juried and solo art shows in Southern Ontario . For the past several years I have opened my home studio to clients and neighbours in mid November to give them the opportunity to view and purchase my work.

While my initial medium was watercolour I currently work almost exclusively in oil. Private and corporate collectors in Canada , the United States and the Bahamas hold my work. Current work can be viewed at my Pickering studio or at my website: www.alpheusjones.com

I am a member of the Durham Art Counsel, Visual Art Ontario and Landscape Artist International.
